Meet your 2014 Huntsville Classic Chairmen

We are thrilled to have Robert Mayes and Ron Poteat leading the way for the 2014 Huntsville Classic.  We thought you would enjoy getting to know them a little better!

Robert Mayes

Tell us about your family.
Pam and I have two children, both married: Rob and Emily Mayes and Kelly and Thomas O’Connor.  We have one grandson, Liam Patrick O’Connor.  Zoe is our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

How long you have lived in Huntsville?
I’ve lived here for 35 years.  I moved here in 1979 and fell in love with Pam, who had just moved to Huntsville from Auburn.  We were married and chose to make Huntsville our home.

What is your history with the Foundation, and why do you like to be involved?
I’m not sure how many years I’ve been involved with the Foundation.  It’s been quite a while, going back to the Development Council.  I’m drawn to the Foundation because of the people there and the passion they have to insure that everyone in our community has the opportunity to receive the best in medical care. (Note: Robert served on the Foundation Board for five years, two years as chairman.)

What is your favorite Doobie Brothers song?
China Grove

What is your favorite food?
This is a hard one! My comfort food is TexMex.  A very close second is beef brisket served with jalapenos on a paper plate.  I’m not sure either one would pass Huntsville Hospital’s standard for healthy cuisine!

Who is your favorite band of all time?
Led Zeppelin – hands down!  They were brilliant no matter what style of music they played.

Do you have any hobbies?
I enjoy playing golf and hiking with Pam.

What is one thing we would be surprised to know about you?
I grew up with a circus family.  Just kidding!  It is true that I’m a Spanish citizen.
Ron Poteat

Tell us about your family.
My wife, Shari, and I have three children (Laura, Lauren, and David), one grandchild (Austin, soon to be joined by his cousin, due May 11th!) and our Labrador Retriever Hank.

How long you have lived in Huntsville?
I came to Huntsville as an Army kid in 1973 and found home.

What is your history with the Foundation, and why do you like to be involved?
I was honored to be asked to join Huntsville Hospital Foundation’s board and served six years, and I’m very excited to be co-Chair of the Classic in 2014.  Huntsville Hospital has been there through some of the best and toughest times for my family and me, always providing excellent care with compassion and quality which we greatly appreciate.

What is your favorite Doobie Brothers song?
China Grove.  As a young guitarist it was a prerequisite that I learn it to be in my first garage band!

What is your favorite food?
Anything low carb, of course!  Thank you Huntsville Hospital diabetes control team for the education and support!

Who is your favorite band of all time?
Steven Curtis Chapman, James Taylor, Third Day, Jason Isbell, Jackson Browne, Mary Chapin Carpenter, REM – I can’t choose just one!

Do you have any hobbies?
I love to play golf, but I’m not very good!  I enjoy playing music and spending time with the grandchildren.

What is one thing we would be surprised to know about you?
I’m surprised I can’t think of anything!
